CONTROL Resonant Steam Deck: what the studio, Valve and testers say

The studio said the game would support Steam Deck at launch. Valve’s own compatibility report now rates it Unsupported, citing graphics performance, and two reviewers who tested pre-launch builds on a Deck did not get a steady 30 fps either.

The reviewer tests below were made on pre-launch builds. A patch the studio ties to the Deck, or Valve raising the rating, would change this.

Three views on Steam Deck support

The studio said

“Yes. CONTROL Resonant will support Steam Deck at launch.”

The answer is one sentence. It promised support and gave no settings or frame rate target.

Valve’s rating

Unsupported. Valve’s compatibility report for the game now returns that category, with graphics performance as the reason given. The same report separately marks the game’s SteamOS startup as functional, which is a narrower check than the Deck rating.

The studio’s promise and Valve’s rating are separate things, and the rating is Valve’s to give.

Testers found

Two reviewers, both writing before launch, found the Deck short of 30 fps in places, which fits the reason Valve’s report now gives. Their accounts are set out below, and both are reviewers, not the studio.

What the two reviewers report

Rock Paper Shotgun. The reviewer writes that “Its supposed Steam Deck support hasn’t quite panned out”, describing very low settings and heavy upscaling “failing to keep it above 30fps in busy city scenes”.

RPG Site. The reviewer tested a Steam Deck OLED, a Steam Deck LCD and a ROG Ally. On the Deck the game is said to support 16:10 with HDR but “can’t hold 30fps even on the lowest preset and with Ultra Performance upscaling”, with hitching and some freezing while moving through the open parts of the city. The same piece says the PC options include a Handheld preset, “in addition to the Low, Medium, High, and Ultra presets available”. The reviewer’s advice: “My recommendation right now is to wait for patches before playing Control Resonant on Steam Deck”.

RPG Site also reports that the game had already improved with the first patch it received before the review embargo lifted, and that the ROG Ally it tried looked better than the Deck, with the same freezing.

If a Deck is how you want to play

  • The reviewer tests above come from pre-launch builds, and Valve’s Unsupported rating can change with a patch. Check the game’s Steam page for a newer rating before relying on either account.
  • If handheld play is the reason you would buy, note that Valve sets Steam’s refund rules. Read them on Steam’s own refund page before you pay.
  • RPG Site names two settings as the only acceptable ones in its test: balanced upscaling with the Handheld preset, with drops below 30 fps still expected. Treat that as one tester’s starting point.
