CONTROL Resonant Steam Deck: what the studio, Valve and testers say

The studio says the game will support Steam Deck at launch. Valve’s compatibility report for the game returns no rating, and two reviewers who tested on a Deck did not get a steady 30 fps.

The studio’s promise and Valve’s rating are separate things, and the rating is Valve’s to give.

Testers found

Two reviewers, both writing before launch, found the Deck short of 30 fps in places. Their accounts are set out below, and both are reviewers, not the studio.

What the two reviewers report

Rock Paper Shotgun. The reviewer writes that “Its supposed Steam Deck support hasn’t quite panned out”, describing very low settings and heavy upscaling “failing to keep it above 30fps in busy city scenes”. Reviewed in Rock Paper Shotgun: CONTROL Resonant review

RPG Site. The reviewer tested a Steam Deck OLED, a Steam Deck LCD and a ROG Ally. On the Deck the game is said to support 16:10 with HDR but “can’t hold 30fps even on the lowest preset and with Ultra Performance upscaling”, with hitching and some freezing while moving through the open parts of the city. The same piece says the PC options include a Handheld preset, “in addition to the Low, Medium, High, and Ultra presets available”. RPG Site also reports that the game had already improved with the first patch it received before the review embargo lifted, and that the ROG Ally it tried looked better than the Deck, with the same freezing.

If a Deck is how you want to play

  • The evidence above comes from pre-launch builds, so a later patch can move the result. Check for a Valve rating on the game’s Steam page and for word from the studio before relying on either account.
  • If handheld play is the reason you would buy, note that Valve sets Steam’s refund rules. Read them on Steam’s own refund page before you pay.
  • RPG Site names two settings as the only acceptable ones in its test: balanced upscaling with the Handheld preset, with drops below 30 fps still expected. Treat that as one tester’s starting point.
